Small Group Questions
  • Read verses 11–12. What specific words or phrases does Paul use to describe the Gentiles’ situation before Christ? What emotions or realities do those words convey (e.g., “separate,” “excluded,” “without hope,” “without God”)?
  • In verses 14–15, Paul says Jesus “destroyed the dividing wall of hostility.” What did that “dividing wall” refer to historically in the Temple? What deeper, spiritual barriers might Paul also have in mind?
  • Paul writes that God’s purpose was to “create one new humanity out of the two.” How is this different from saying “God made the Jews and Gentiles get along?”
  • How does the cross put our hostility to death?
  • How do you personally build your sense of identity in contrast to others – by what makes us “better,” “smarter,” or “more spiritual” etc.? What would it mean for you to have your primary identity shaped by the cross instead?
  • How might we as a church or small group become a more clear demonstration of the New Humanity?
